The world of skincare can be a little overwhelming! Just when you think you have your regime sorted, a new miracle product will be released that you “must-have”. But we’re here to tell you that great skincare doesn’t need to be complicated or include 15 different products.
As with most things in life, quality is preferred over quantity. A few high-quality products are going to deliver far superior results than dozens from the shelf of the supermarket.
So what products should you use? And for those starting their regime from scratch, which items should you purchase first?
Aside from protecting your skin from sun damage and melanoma, SPF is also your number one product for age prevention. Did you know over 80% of photoageing is caused by UV rays? This includes fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots and pigmentation.
This is why the first step to any anti-ageing skincare routine should start with a broad-spectrum sunscreen applied every day- even if the sun isn’t out! The term “broad spectrum” simply means it will protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
UVB rays from the sun target the upper layers of the skin, causing sunburn and even skin cancer; while UVA rays penetrate deeper, breaking down collagen and creating harmful free radicals that cause premature skin ageing.
When choosing your sunscreen, we always recommend choosing a sun protection factor of at least 15 for daily use or 30-50 for prolonged periods in the sun. You can then choose your preferred formulation: physical or chemical. The main difference between physical sunscreens and chemical sunscreens is their mode of action. Chemical sunscreens penetrate into the skin and absorb UV rays, converting them into heat energy. Physical sunscreens generally sit on top of the skin; reflecting and scattering the UV rays like a mirror.
This moisturising physical SPF is available in an untinted or tinted version. The tinted version is a self-regulating tinted that will suit most skin tones.
Cleansing is an essential part of every skincare regime. It removes dirt, oils, makeup and SPF, helping to keep your complexion clear and healthy. When it comes to choosing a product, there are many different options on the market- gels, foams, lotions, creams, balms and oils.
It’s important you find an option that ensures your skin feels clean and fresh but not stripped or dried. This is particularly important for oily skin as many cleansers claim to dry out excess oil, which just leads to your skin overcompensation and producing even more!
For dry skin, nourishing creams and lotions are often preferred. Congested or acne-prone skin can opt for something with AHAs, BHAs or acids to help refine skin tone. Normal or combination skin can switch between a gentle option or something that includes mild exfoliation, depending on how their skin is feeling. As a general rule, if your skin feels dry, tight or itchy after cleansing, you should switch to something milder.
Pure plant oils adhere to impurities and makeup to deeply cleanse without drying or stripping precious moisture from the skin. Drench cleanser helps to balance the skin’s natural oil flow and melt those hard to shift blockages from pores, maintaining a soft, dewy glow.
Dermalist Ultra Hydrating Lactic Cleanser is uniquely formulated without any form of detergent, this oil-based cleanser uses emulsifiers to efficiently break down makeup, impurities and pollution to reveal skin that is perfectly pH balanced, beautifully soft and ultra-hydrated.
Moisturisers are probably the most commonly used skincare product and are key to healthy skin. Face creams and lotions provide skin with hydration, nutrients, and can also contain active ingredients that address specific concerns. A good moisturiser will secure moisture in your skin, and keep it hydrated and plump throughout the day or night as well as protect your skin’s barrier. This outer layer of your skin helps protect your complexion from harsh elements and holds in moisture, preventing your skin from drying out.
During the day, a lighter cream or gel moisturiser may be preferred. Many also contain SPF, combining two essential products into one (just make sure it’s broad spectrum!). At night, a richer cream can be chosen to nourish the skin while you sleep. Often night creams contain ingredients that are too heavy for daily use or have actives that increase sun sensitivity, such as vitamin A.
Although you may already use serums, treatments, or facial oils, your moisturisers should always be your final skincare step in your regime to lock in all that goodness!
This light enzymatic lotion absorbs instantly leaving no greasy residue. Suitable for problematic or acne prone skin types as the enzyme/salicylic acid blend will work throughout the day to dissolve dead skin cell build up, allowing pores to remain clean and unclogged.
This 3 in 1 mid-weight face cream will soothe, hydrate and firm normal or sensitive skin to leave it feeling calm, hydrated and soft.
Vitamins C + A
There are many different active ingredients for different skin concerns and no two regimes will be exactly the same. However, there are a few ingredients that can be beneficial for almost any skin type.
For daytime use, we recommend trying out a vitamin C serum. While there are many forms of vitamin C, they all work towards the same end goal: youthful, protected skin. Vitamin C visibly improves the appearance of excess pigmentation for smoother and brighter skin. Considered one of the best antioxidants in skincare, vitamin C is able to fight off free radicals which can cause premature ageing.
This Vitamin C powder will help slow down the signs of ageing, boost collagen production, even skin tone and repair the skin from environmental damage. Add JUICE C to your Skin Juice face cream for a brighter glow.
Remodels, protects & restores healthy skin. Recalibrates skin to function in its youthful state. Graduate up to this Ultra Potent Vitamin A formula.
